Off Gassing

silk snow mattressThe very first thing we needed to do with our new Silk & Snow mattress is take it out of the box and get it set up. It should show up right at your door and in a fairly compact 85lb box, for a mattress anyway. Getting it to where it needs to go will take two sets of hands. Once you get it to where you’ll be sleeping it should only take a few minutes to get it out of the box and take it out of the plastic and come to life.

During the unboxing process you may notice a bit of off gassing but it should be very minimal, especially since it is made in the USA or Canada, depending on where you live. With most boxed mattresses there will be a little bit of smell initially. Once it is allowed to unroll and take shape it should dissipate. It should be fine within a few hours but if you are more sensitive to certain smells letting it breath up to 12 hours would probably be a good idea.

When setting up your new mattress it will need a foundation that provides a flat, even surface that will support the weight of the mattress as well as the sleepers. It also will need to be the right height for you as well as be aesthetically appealing. The Silk + Snow mattress would work great on a box spring with or without a frame, an adjustable base, a platform bed or slatted bed. To find a foundation that would work for you check out our frames & bases reviews.

Comfort

silk snow mattress reviewThe Silk + Snow mattress uses a universal comfort approach with one standard option that should appeal to the vast majority. They comfort goal of this mattress was to use two layers of memory foam. One that offers plushness and plenty of pressure relief and another that offers responsiveness and bounce. Creating the perfect compromise of sink and spring to allow for plenty of comfort as well as ease of movement.

This mattress should appeal to most and has a more medium to soft-medium feel. It should fall around a 4.5 to a 5 on a firmness scale of 1-10.  1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. Even with this mattress ranking a little more on the soft side of the scale it should still provide plenty of support and proper spinal alignment. The Silk + Snow mattress will probably appeal to more of the predominately side sleepers and back sleepers because it is a little softer. However, the dense premium foams should still offer plenty of support and even if you occasionally sleep on your stomach it should be okay. If you are a heavier person the support should be fine, but it will probably feel softer and cocoon you more.

We really enjoyed the feel of this mattress and found it to be a true medium feel. Many universal feel mattresses tend to lean towards medium-firm, so having a mattress that still had the necessary support but felt a little more medium was is definitely nice. Especially if you prefer a softer to more medium feeling bed. The layers of memory foam proved to be both comfortable and contouring, without feeling too cocooning. There is good pressure relief and the memory foam was responsive enough to easily move about. Overall, the comfort of this mattress was exactly what you should expect for a premium memory foam mattress that should be falling under a medium to medium-soft feel.

Motion Transfer

silk snow mattress reviewLike most all foam mattresses this mattress should have very little vibrations caused by movement. The foams should absorb the majority of vibrations and makes for very minimal to no motion transfer to be felt. The layers of memory foam deaden the feel of movement, yet are still easy to move on. This mattress would be great for anyone who shares a bed because of this. There will be little disturbance when getting in and out of bed. And even light sleepers that a low tolerance for others moving about should be fine.

Sleeps Cool

silk snow mattress reviewThe Silk + Snow mattress uses a memory foam that has a higher rate of temperature responsiveness that should transfer heat 13x faster than conventional foams. This should help keep the mattress at a more regulated temperature that won’t increase with body heat. This mattress also has a secondary layer of memory foam that is more springy and less cocooning that should allow you to not feel stuck too. The Silk & Snow beds main support is from dense base foam that will allow you to not sink in too far. Even with this mattress being a more medium to medium-soft feel you shouldn’t feel too warm.

Edge Support

The edge support on the Silk & Snow mattress should feel stable and create a solid, edge to edge usable sleep surface. The dense base foam paired with the supportive memory foam should create a durable perimeter. Sleeping on this mattress you are able to feel a consistent feel across the entire surface and not have a “rolling out of the bed” feel. As far as sitting on the edge goes, you will feel some support but it won’t be ideal for sitting on the edge.

Materials

The Silk + Snow mattress is a 10″,  3 layer mattress. This mattress is made of some seriously premium materials. The top layer is a 2″ of 4lb density memory foam. This memory foam is a comfort layer that provides a plenty of pressure relief and plushness. This layer will contour to your body and help you sink slowly in.

The second layer is 2″ of 2.7lb memory foam as well. This memory foam is a more responsive, springy memory foam that will feel a little bit like latex but also aide in relieving pressure too. The combination of the top two layers should create a plush, cocooning surface with just enough bounce to move around.

The bottom is 6″ of 1.8lb density base foam. This foam is the core of the mattress and should provide stability, strength and support to ensure durability and longevity.

This mattress is covered in a premium, removable and washable cover. It also is infused with silver to keep it clean with it’s natural antibacterial properties. This cover is not only functional, but soft and luxurious as well as aesthetically very pleasing.
