Plank by Brooklyn Bedding – Video Review:
* Note – this is an ALL FOAM Mattress and though it is referenced in a few areas of the video as a hybrid it uses a core foam in the center. This is why the motion transfer was more minimal as well as the edges were less stable than a typical hybrid.
Delivery & Unboxing:
When you order your plank delivery will be included, meaning no additional costs for this service are added to the price. The process will be simple and easy. This durable all foam mattress will be compressed and rolled and put into a box. It will show up at your door just a few days after ordering and will be ready to sleep on in no time. Once the box arrives merely get it to your room, take it out and cut the plastic away. It will expand fairly quickly and be ready to sleep on in a few hours. However, the truest feel of the mattress may take up to several days to firm up to.
Another thing to note is the fumes when unboxing the mattress. This mattress is a USA made bed with materials that are kept in check with mindful regulations. Though there may be a few new mattress smells when unwrapping it they won’t be strong and should dissipate quickly. Leaving you with limited to no off gassing.
See just how easy this mattress is to unbox as well as our first impressions and any off gassing we experienced below!
Plank by Brooklyn Bedding – Comfort:
This Brooklyn Bedding specialty mattress is very focused on providing an option for anyone who likes a firm or extra firm mattress. Being a dual sided flippable bed you’d expect a softer and firmer side. However, with the Plank you get firm and extra-firm. Making this niche mattress one that will appeal to anyone who likes very little give. And more than likely is a stomach or back sleeper.
The firm side is more closely considered a medium-firm with it falling around a 6.5 to 7 on the firmness scale. This side definitely offers a bit more give making it more universal. However it may still be too firm for side sleepers or anyone looking for a softer to medium feel. If you a side sleeper and want something more contouring check out our Best Mattress for Side Sleepers.
The extra-firm side is even firmer, if that is possible. Coming in around a 9 on the firmness scale and offering a very solid feel. If you are one of the few people who likes a flat and solid sleeping surface than this side is definitely for you. This definitely lends a hand to the name of this mattress because this does feel like a plank. Creating a very firm feel for anyone who needs extra support and minimal plushness.
Our Plank Comfort Experience:
The Plank by Brooklyn Bedding is truly a unique mattress that will appeal to a very specific sleeper. The two sided all foam bed was one that certainly was firmer than many others we’ve tried. Really putting it into its own category. Though we found side sleeping to be less ideal on this bed anyone who is a back or stomach sleeper needing extra support will really appreciate what the Plank has to offer. We found the firm side to be a little more accommodating to our sleeping preferences. However, the extra-firm side is one that is often not easily found and anyone needing that type of feel will be in luck.
Plank by Brooklyn Bedding – Motion Transfer:
With any all foam mattress motion transfer is typically minimized. This is also true for the Plank. Though the resiliency of the firm foams makes for a tighter surface with a bit of bounce the overall layers of foam do a good job of absorbing excess movement. Making this a mattress that isolates motion fairly well and shouldn’t add any disruptions when sharing a mattress. If you are a very light or sensitive sleeper you may notice a bit of activity from a partner getting in and out of bed, but it will be minimal.
Plank by Brooklyn Bedding – Sleeping Cool:
When it comes to sleeping cool it is certainly hard to warm up if you are riding directly on top of the mattress. Though the Plank bed uses a combination of foams that usually contribute to heat retention the lack of plushness helps keep plenty of air flowing around your body. The dense and firm foams don’t let you sink in deep enough to really build too much heat. However, directly under you may get a bit warmer over the course of the night with no place for it to escape to. Making the Plank by Brooklyn Bedding cooler than most all foam beds but still not quite as cool most other hybrid or latex options.
Plank by Brooklyn Bedding – Edge Support:
The Plank by Brooklyn Bedding is certainly a firm mattress which lends itself to edge support. The sleeping surface of this mattress is consistent and fully usable. With the foams stable under you and the little change or variance in feel from the center to the edge. However, we were a little surprised at the lack of stability around the perimeter when putting you weight on the edge while sitting. The lack of coils or foam encasement around the edge did show a lack of really durable support needed for long term sitting. Though the Plank did great for providing a smooth and consistent sleeping surface it didn’t fair as well for sitting.
Plank by Brooklyn Bedding – Value:
This two sided mattress is only $999 for a queen size. Included with this price is free convenient shipping, a 120 night sleep trial and a ten year warranty. This doesn’t even include our exclusive 20% off coupon that makes it a very reasonable $799. This price is a great deal considering you’re getting two very supportive all foam mattresses in one. The quality and durability of this bed is top notch. And the hard to find extra firm feel of this bed is priceless to anyone struggling to find a very firm bed.
Materials & Construction:
The Plank by Brooklyn Bedding is an 11″ mattress made up of 4 layers of foam. Because of the two sided design the layers of this mattress are similar to that of a sandwich. The foundation of this bed is at the core, located between the comfort layers. This particular core is a thick 7″ of high dense foundation or base foam. This creates a very solid core and very firm feel to start with.
The extra-firm side covers the base foam with 2″ of Firm TitanFlex Foam that offers a firm cushion but keeps it on the denser side to ensure a smooth and less conforming feel. Above this is a .75″ of a Quilted Layer. This adds a bit of softness but keeps the added loft to a minimum and ensures and ultra-firm sleep experience.
The firm side uses the same Quilted Layer but offers 1.5″. Double of the amount used on the extra-firm, to create more of a initial plush or cushioned feel. However, because of the durable base foam not too far down you will only sink in a bit. Making both sides great options for anyone who wants that extra firm feel.
Trial Period & Warranty:
With all Brooklyn Bedding mattresses, including the Plank, comes a 1020 night sleep trial period as well as 10year warranty. Allowing you a full four month time frame to really make sure this mattress is a good fit for you. We always recommend giving your new mattress a few weeks to break in and allow your body to adjust. But, for some reason if you aren’t feeling this bed you have the option to return it and get a full refund. Making the process as easy and efficient on you as possible.
Along with this great customer service you also get a 10 year warranty. This will hopefully never even need to be addressed, but if you have any manufacturing flaws or defects found in your mattress the warranty will ensure of the repair or replacement. This goes along with any unnatural sagging or distortions that for some odd reason you would have.
