The Casper mattress was one of the first popularized online mattress companies. Their claim to fame is having “one perfect mattress for everyone.” We wanted to see for ourselves if there really is a mattress that is perfect for everyone. In theory, it would be great if that were the case, but at the end of the day this mattress may work for most people, but there are those who may prefer a different mattress.
Casper Mattress – Brief Overview:
The Casper bed is probably the most recognized “bed in a box” mattress. This all foam 10 inch bed uses 4 layers to create a medium-firm feel. Casper is meant to sleep well for all shapes and sizes as well as sleeping positions. The top layer is a more responsive layer of foam, meant to mimic latex. This is over a more conforming memory foam layer. The combination makes the bed easy to move on yet still pressure relieving.
Under these comfort layers is a transition layer above the dense base foam. Making a solid and sturdy platform for support and durability. Topped off with a white top cover and durable side panels makes completes the original Casper design.
Casper Co. – Brief Overview:
The Casper brand really was one of the pioneers for solving the problem to reassuring sleepers of trying a mattress sight unseen. Simply by offering a trial period that gave you time to get the mattress into your own bedroom. Sleep on it and let your body adjust. And than make up your mind. All with the ease of free shipping and easy returns and removals. Taking out all the guess work as well as the actual work of going to a store to buy a bed.
Even now, they still offer this service giving you a full 100 night sleep trial period. As well as free shipping and returns to make it easy as possible for you. And even a 10 year warranty. Making this model one that almost every other online mattress vendor could easily follow. Casper may be an original, but is it still the best option?
Below we have our comprehensive video review as well as our detailed written review for the Casper mattress. We will go through how it performs for comfort, motion transfer, sleeping cool and edge support. As well as go over the value, materials & construction, trial period and warranty.

Delivery & Off Gassing:
The very first thing you’ll need to do with your new Casper mattress is take it out of the box and get it set up. It should show up right at your door and in a fairly compact box, for a mattress anyway. Getting it to where it needs to go may take two sets of hands. It is about 75 lbs and a little awkward to maneuver if you’re on your own. Once you get it to where you’ll be sleeping it should only take a few minutes to get it out of the box and take out of the plastic and come to life.
During the unboxing process you will notice a bit of off gassing but it should be minimal. With most boxed mattresses there will be a little bit of smell once it is allowed to unroll and take shape. It should be fine within a few hours but if you are more sensitive to certain smells letting it breathe for 12 to 24 hours would probably be a good idea.
When setting up your new mattress it will need a foundation that provides a flat, even surface that will support the weight of the mattress as well as the sleepers. It also will need to be the right height for you as well as be aesthetically appealing. The Casper mattress would work great on a box spring with or without a frame, an adjustable base, a platform bed or slatted bed. To find a foundation that would work for you check out our frames & bases reviews.
Casper Mattress – Comfort:
The Casper mattress has a universal “one size fits all” approach to comfort. There is only one comfort level available and it falls in the medium to medium-firm feel, roughly around a 6 to a 6.5 on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being softest and 10 being firmest.
During our time sleeping on this mattress preparing for the Casper mattress review, we found that this comfort level would probably work well for the vast majority of people. For back sleepers it provides good lumbar support, as well as contours to your shoulders and neck.
For a stomach sleeper it is firm enough to give you the needed support to not allow your back to bow. And for someone sleeping on their side we feel this mattress provides the necessary support but could feel too firm for someone who likes their shoulder and hip to sink into a softer feeling mattress.
As far as a heavier person sleeping on this mattress goes, you may find that this mattress has a little less support, especially for stomach sleeping and may work better for back and side sleeping. Overall the Casper mattress is comfortable for the most part and though it would work well for many, it probably isn’t perfect for everyone.
Casper Mattress – Motion Transfer:
With many all foam mattresses there will be minimal motion transfer due to the nature of materials. The motion transfer specifically for the Casper mattress was minimal. We noticed very little partner disturbance, which is beneficial for anyone sharing a bed with someone who is getting in and out of bed at different times throughout the night or if someone is a light sleeper and doesn’t want to feel the other person moving around.
Casper Mattress – Sleeping Cool:
This mattress has a few features that help keep your body temperature regulated while you sleep and prevent you from over heating. The woven stretch knit cover over the top is breathable and helps to dissipate heat away from the body. Also, because the layers of foam are a little firmer this helps prevent you from overly sinking into the mattress. And in turn helps eliminate excess heat by giving you better circulation.
Also, this Casper mattress was designed with an open cell top layer. This helps pull heat away from the body and also acts as a barrier from the memory foam. We found this mattress to perform fine for sleeping coo. We didn’t feel like it increased the feeling of overheating. And having it a little on the firm side allowed us to feel like we weren’t sinking in too much.
Casper Mattress – Edge Support:
Edge support is one of the things you probably don’t think about initially when looking at a mattress. But it can be a very important feature once you get it home and use it daily. Edge support is especially important if you sit on the edge of your bed for any reason, like to sleep close to the edge or share the bed and need to really utilize the full sleeping surface.
While doing the Casper mattress review we found the edge support to be a lot like most online all foam mattresses. Which is okay but lacks the higher end edge support you would find from a traditional innerspring mattress. Or any bed with with dense foam encasement or heavy border wire. For sleeping, the Casper would work fine and you should be able to utilize the full edge to edge surface. But if you are planning on sitting on the edge for more than just a place to put on your socks it may lack the necessary support over time.
Casper Mattress – Value:
Casper’s value comes in at a good price point, being at $950 for a queen size. This original bed in a box also has a 100 night sleep trial, 10 year warranty and even free shipping. Making it even better is our exclusive $50 off coupon too. Save no using the code: SLEEPGUIDE50 at Casper.com.
Materials & Construction:
The Casper mattress combines 4 layers of foam to make a 10” thick mattress. The top layer is a 1.5″ breathable comfort layer. This top layer is resilient and has a good bounce that returns to original form. It also gives a softer feel without sinking in due to elasticity in the foam. It is also breathable and will help reduce the feeling of overheating.
*This top layer has replaced the dunlop latex that was in previous generations of Casper mattresses and tries to use a less expensive material to get the same benefits, but may lack some of the quality that was in the original latex.
Next is a layer of 1.5″ 4lb memory foam that conforms to a persons body. As well as helps in relieving pressure points to reduce tossing and turning. This makes the mattress a little more comfortable for side sleeping.
The third layer is a 1.5″ layer of 2.5lb transitional poly foam. This layer adds deep comfort and distributes weight evenly. This is the last layer of comfort before the base foam. And makes a great transition between the top layers and foundation.
The 5″ base layer is 1.8lb dense poly foam and provides the foundation and durability of the mattress. The base foam is a solid foam and shouldn’t allow for any bottoming out. As well as provides the necessary support for the other layers to do their jobs.
All of these are covered in a premium, woven polyester cover that adds about another 1/2″. The cover has a nice durable feel to the touch and is tight to the mattress with good response. The neutral gray and white colored design aesthetically compliment the mattress as well. The Casper Mattress not only feels great but the design is impeccable too.
Trial Period & Warranty:
The Casper mattress has always provided a 100 night sleep trial period. Giving anyone who may have a bit of hesitation of buying a bed online some relief. If your mattress isn’t everything you need it to be, no problem. Casper is very easy to work with and has great customer service. Making sure that if you aren’t getting the sleep you need they will easily return and refund your mattress.
They also offer a 10 year warranty too. This warranty is just like most warranties that come with any mattress you would buy in store or online. It provides you with a guarantee for your mattress to be free of defects or manufacturing flaws for the life of your bed. As well as any unusual wear that is outside the norm. These aspects of online mattresses make buying a bed sight unseen much more reassuring. And provide customer satisfaction regardless. We hope that this in depth Casper mattress review has given you the confidence to decide on your next mattress purchase.
