Like the Casper Essential, you will want an extra set of hands when the Tuft & Needle mattress is delivered. It is approximately 60 lbs and somewhat awkward to maneuver. Once you get it to where you will be sleeping however, just open the box, cut the plastic, and your mattress will come to life.
Like most mattresses in a box, the Tuft & Needle will have some fumes, but not a lot. If you are particularly sensitive, you may want to open a window for a few hours. This is helpful because the mattress needs 24-48 days to expand fully before getting the truest feel anyway.

Casper Essential Mattress Materials:
The Casper Essential gives you 8.5” of comfort. Each layer is broken down as follows: The first layer gives you 2” of breathable poly foam. This layer is not only breathable but also adds a touch of softness and bounce.
Next is a 1” layer of Transition Memory Foam. This layer supports pressure points while continuing to your body. Finally, there is a 5.5” dense base foam layer. This layer is all about proving support and a strong surface for the more comfortable layers to rest on. Wrap it all up in a durable upholstery grade fabric, and you have a mattress intended for years of use.

Tuft & Needle Materials:
The Tuft & Needle is also multi-layered for a mattress that is 10” thick. The first layer is a 3” proprietary adaptive foam by Tuft & Needle, infused with gel beads. This layer will feel like the cross between memory foam and latex, but of lesser quality than many higher end foams. The second layer is 7” of polyester and rayon blend. It creates a dense base for decent support for the mattress and sleeper. It is truly unique how much comfort can fit inside a box, but keep in mind what you are paying for, for a mattress is a box. Convenient and cost-effective are this mattresses best qualities.

Casper Essential Mattress Comfort:
The Casper Essential offers one uniform comfort level. The idea is that it appeals to the vast majority, it also provides the support to maintain good alignment. The Casper Essential should be adaptable enough that it works well throughout your various sleep positions. Thus, it is a bit softer than the original Casper, giving you an overall medium-firm feel.
The Casper Essential is not too soft and not too firm, which means it may not be supportive enough for large sleepers or stomach sleepers. For this reason, the Casper Essential is perfect for lighter sleepers such as kids/teens or as a starter/ guest bed. When it comes to the weight of two sleepers, we do not recommend the Casper Essential. This amount of weight may decrease the shelf life of the mattress by more than you expected. Simply stick to the solo sleepers with the Casper Essential.
Tuft & Needle Mattress Comfort:
The Tuft & Needle also only offers some size fits all style to their mattress. It falls in the medium-firm category as well range from a 6.5-7 on a 1-10 comfort scale. Per a real life review of the mattress, it should be supportive and comfortable enough for anyone
More specifically, it provides lumbar support and contours to your neck and shoulders for back sleepers. For stomach sleepers, it is for, enough not to let your back bow. For side sleepers, this mattress is supportive enough, but it may be too firm if you like your hip and shoulders to sink in more.
Finally for a heavier person, this mattress may seem less supportive. The base foam of the Tuft & Needle is of lesser quality than some other base foams. Otherwise, the top layer does find a happy medium feel and gives you just enough spring and sink. Due to the base foam, we are not so sure how this mattress will feel over time, but for use as a spare bed, this mattress could be ideal.
Casper Essential vs Tuft and Needle – Motion Transfer:
If you’re going to share either of these mattresses with a partner, the one thing you definitely want is good motion transfer. Both mattresses will ensure that you can’t feel your partner tossing and turning throughout the night. The Casper Essential we can say for sure performs optimally and isolates motion. It quickly and easily absorbs motion before it can travel. Since the Casper Essential is better as a kid/teen mattress, even if you’re pet is on your bed or if you’re tossing and turning, motion transfer is limited.
The Tuft & Needle also follows suit since it is a foam mattress and most foam mattresses have minimal motion transfer anyway. For your typical reasons to get out of bed, like going to the bathroom or feeding the baby, the Tuft & Needle ensures no sleep disturbance. Your partner shouldn’t feel you get out of bed and you shouldn’t feel your partner get out of bed. A match made in heaven!
Casper Essential vs Tuft and Needle – Sleeping Cool:
One thing that foam mattresses don’t have in their favor is the ability to sleep cool. For anyone who sleeps hot, the Casper Essential might not be your answer. Although the cover is breathable, the entire mattress does not offer solutions to coolness. Overall there is little air flow created with the Casper Essential since it is a more medium feel and your body does sink in.
Although not perfect, the Tuft & Needle takes the prize when it comes to sleeping cool. It offers a top layer infused with gel beads to dissipate heat. Since it is more firm, the Tuft & Needle also prevents you from sinking in, therefore giving you better circulation. Overall not sinking in as much is helpful, and the Tuft & Needle performs fine for sleeping cool.
Casper Essential vs Tuft and Needle- Edge Support:
The Casper Essential and Tuft and Needle are mostly evenly matched when it comes to edge support. Because they both use standard materials on a budget, there is okay edge support. With the Casper Essential it is easy to feel bottomed out and collapsed in any one section. And sitting on the edge leaves little support. However, sleeping mostly away from the edge provides you a decent sleep. Once again, if you are lighter, like a child, this mattress is the way to go.
The Tuft & Needle is the same in that edge support is not so great. If you sit on the edge such as to put on your shoes, you will quickly get a sliding off the edge feel. If you sleep on the edge, you will quickly get a rolling out of bed feel. However, if you’re a single sleeper and sleep 3-4 inches away from the edge, you will be supported and have a good night’s rest.

For the Tuft & Needle while it may not be long-lasting, you are getting more than what you pay for compared to other mattresses in this niche.
Casper Essential vs Tuft and Needle – Trial Period & Warranty:
Once again, the Casper Essential and Tuft & Needle are almost exactly matched. Both offer a 100 night sleep trial and standard 10 year warranty. These are great perks in addition to an unbeatable price, to make sure the mattress is a good fit for you. Even if you’re concerned about the quality, give these mattresses a try. If you’re not satisfied within the trial period, returns are easy and you will be fully refunded. That’s like 100 nights of free, guiltless sleep.
Casper Essential vs Tuft and Needle – Summary:

And if you want your guests to have a good night’s sleep when they stay with you, these are great options. The Casper Essential and Tuft & Needle May have it’s limits, but there are more benefits than one. The biggest benefit, on your wallet.
