When it comes to the well being of our children there is little that most parents won’t do. Making sure they are healthy, loved and developing are just a few areas that go into parenthood. We make decisions for these tiny beings to benefit them from the moment they wake to the moment they sleep. And, even while they are sleeping. Like what mattress they are on. Understanding which is the best mattress for kids on the market will not only help your little ones but also you. By ensuring they are getting their rest, so you can get yours too.
Below you will find amazing mattress recommendations for your kids. Focusing on where to buy a mattress, mattresses at various price points and specifically the best beds for each stage, from infancy to teenage years. Helping you find the best mattresses for children and kids to make sure they get the best sleep to grow and learn optimally.
Mattress Sizes & Chart:
Before figuring out what mattress to get it is good to have an understanding of what size you will need. It is not only important to know what standard size mattress is best, but also the ideal thickness too.
Sometime if you are purchasing bunk beds or trundle beds you have a limited thickness to work with. And knowing upfront what size will fit best will not only limit you options but will help when it comes to price too. Since mattress prices vary on size you may find yourself torn between a larger mattress that may not have the same quality as a smaller option that is built better.
Standard Mattress Size Chart:
What To Look For In A Mattress:
When it comes to buying a mattress for your child there are a few things to keep in mind. The biggest one in my opinion is style. Whether to go with an all foam bed or a hybrid and innerspring could make quite a bit of difference. Personally, I lean towards a coiled or hybrid option when looking for my daughters. I personally like the durability, wear and support. As well as the fact that heat can dissipate and they don’t get overheated.
Sometimes young children can’t let you know verbally what is best for them. However, when you notice heat rash on their backs and a tendency to wake up more regularly these both may be signs that they are too warm. Especially with babies who tend to wear sleep sacks too. Already having extra layers on their back they will be warmer, especially on a foam mattress.
There are certainly several great options when it comes to the best mattress for your kids, but having a better idea from the get go what you want, makes it easier. Because of this fact I have tried to add several options that are both in the hybrid and all foam categories. Making sure that whatever is best for your child’s sleeping needs can easily be met.
Best Place to Buy A Mattress for Kids:
When it comes to buying a mattress for your child a few things can dictate where it is best to go. Personally, with two little ones online shopping is my go to for everything from weekly groceries to clothes and even bedding and mattresses. But, buying something site unseen can sometimes have its downside. By not being able to see and feel something for yourself you may be disappointed at your purchase.
However, with all brands being so accessible, accommodating and easy to try without committing you don’t have much to loose. When it comes to the best place to buy a mattress I suggest going with a reputable online brand that offers a trial period. This way you won’t have buyer’s remorse if a bed doesn’t work out. All you have to do is contact the company and they will remove the bed and refund your money.
If you opt with buying a mattress on Amazon or Overstock, or someplace along those lines, make sure you understand your return options. Most of the time with a mattress bought from a larger distributor your won’t have the same conveniences for returns.
And if they even offer returns you will more than likely have to send the mattress back, which is a nightmare. So understand that even if you buy a name brand bed through Amazon, you won’t be getting the same benefits from buying directly from the brand.
And, if you are still in the mindset of seeing, trying and potentially getting a mattress the same day, than I would recommend going to your local mattress store. Personally I would shop small and go to a local, smaller mattress store. But, many larger mattress chains will have several options and potentially more in stock to take home that day.
Best Mattresses Online:
If you decide that buying a mattress online is the way to go then I would keep a few things in mind. First, I would focus on working with an established and reliable brand. This will ensure the process is great from start to end and they have a good system in place. I would than make sure that they have a few options too. By having a few varying options this allows you to decide on what mattress is best for you and your little ones.
Whether it be a certain style, price point or specific qualities you want to make sure that your needs are met. A few brands that not only have great price points, but also several options are the following:
- This brand uses some of the finest craftsmanship and materials in the industry. They also have a great line of natural crib mattresses (Poppy, Dandelion & Wildfern) as well as an organic kids mattress (Juniper) and even a well priced memory foam mattress (Cypress Bamboo). The biggest downfall is that the crib and kids mattress don’t have a trial period. So, if you do purchase you don’t have the option of returning.
- Though this brand doesn’t offer a line specific to children they have a few options that make for the perfect choice in mattresses. Both the Brooklyn Bowery and Brooklyn Bowery Hybrid are two of my favorite options for kids and teens. These mattresses are at a great price point and don’t skimp on the quality. Wit a more durable build and ideal level of firmness you can’t go wrong. You also have a 120 night sleep trial too.
5 Little Monkeys:
- If you are looking for an all foam mattress made specifically for a smaller frame, this line is great. Not only do they specialize in an ideal mattress just for kids, but an entire 5 Little Monkeys sleep system that includes the mattress, mattress protector and perfectly sized pillow. Using healthy and natural materials to give your child the perfect sleeping surface made just for them. Available in three mattress sizes and with or without the pillow and protector.
Best Mattress on Amazon:
If you do opt to purchase through Amazon I would check out some of their most popular and highly rated mattresses. Even read through a few of the reviews to see what shoppers have to say. Also, if you happen to think a more recognizable brand (like Casper, Tuft & Needle and Cocoon) is for you. Purchase directly through them for the best customer service, current promotions and ability to use the trial period and warranty.

Best Kids Mattress On A Budget:
We know the budget is important to many mattress shoppers. This is even more true when it comes to shopping for a kids mattress. Most of the time you will be looking for a Twin, Twin XL or Full size. These mattresses tend to be less expensive because they use less material. This also means that it is usually easier to stay within a stricter budget too. With many varying price points you are sure to find a bed that checks the boxes and will help your little one get their rest.
Best Mattresses Under $500:
A $500 budget is a healthy budget, especially for a Twin size. Even giving you plenty of room to get a substantial Full or Twin XL size if needed too. Below are two options for this price range that feature a hybrid mattress with a coil system paired with comfort foams. As well as a memory foam option that offers several layers of foam from top to bottom. Both great choices with their own appeal.

When it comes to a mattress that is under the $500 price point that will really deliver on support, comfort and long term durability you can’t go wrong with Brooklyn Bedding’s Bowery Hybrid. Thanks to Linenspa’s affordable pricing and reputable brand, you actually will have a few options in this price point through this brand. This 8″ hybrid mattress combines coils and two layers of foam to give you a medium-firm bed.

Best Mattress Under $100:
Even at an exceptionally tight budget you can still get a great mattress for less than $100. This is where Amazon and Overstock can really help you find a great deal. Both companies offering an array of options, especially in Twin sizes, that won’t break the bank. Overstock tends to offer additional discounts promoting many specials that will bring beds easily under the $100 mark. These do have a tendency to change, so your best bet is to check out Overstock.com to see what is currently available.
Otherwise, Amazon also will have a few mattresses that are less than $100. One in particular that offers a basic, yet solid build, is the Classic Brands 7″ Firm Innerspring Mattress. This mattress will be a medium-firm to firm feeling coil and foam bed. The coils are 5″ thick, with about 2″ of foam for support and comfort. Making this a great option for any kids bed.

Best Mattress for Cribs:
When it comes to the best crib mattresses I will stand by my personal experience for this category. Offering two sound pieces of advice when crib mattress shopping. First, buy a coil crib mattress. Regardless of whether it is more of less expensive it will be better for support, durability, sleeping cool and dissipating any fumes. Second, either opt for a two sided mattress that is more ideal for infant and toddler stages, or by a firmer mattress in general.
After reviewing and buying several crib mattresses I will say that these two takeaways are key. My first daughter had a natural covered dual sided coil crib mattress – it was PERFECT. It didn’t even break the bank, coming in under $120 and I never had issues with support, off gassing or her getting too warm.
However, I made the mistake of purchasing a memory foam crib mattress for by second daughter and regretted it. Even with the hundreds of supposed 5 star reviews, this mattress was AWFUL. It was by far the words smelling mattress I have been around. If I can’t stand it, how is my baby? I literally took the mattress cover off and let it air out in the garage for 3+ weeks. And even after that, it still stinks. Not to mention that the foams seem to already be breaking down and causing a dip. And the worst part is how hot her back gets.
Trust me – DON’T get a memory foam crib mattress.
For the best mattress for cribs I highly recommend the Sealy Cotton Cozy Rest 2 Stage Mattress. Not only is this Amazon’s Choice, but it is also my choice and for good reason. It is one that will give you piece of mind and is healthy, supportive and will grow with your baby.

Best Mattress for Toddlers:
The great thing is that most crib mattresses are dual sided. Intentionally meant to grow with your child from infancy through toddler years. Making your job much easier by doing nothing more than flipping their crib mattress from one side to the other. Above is the best crib mattress, that I personally think could also be the best toddler mattress too.
It still offers all the great benefits of the firmer infant side. But, now is slightly softer to help your toddler sleep more comfortably in all positions. The Sealy Cotton Cozy Rest 2 Stage Crib mattress offers amazing support, sleeps cool and is priced right. I would definitely even recommend this mattress for a toddler bed too. Check it out at Amazon.com.
However, if you are upgrading your toddler to a larger mattress, than there are a few more options to consider and a little more research you might feel the need to do. Let me help you again! I personally again will stand by avoiding an all foam mattress for your toddler. Little ones tend to heat up and if your little ones are anything like mine they aren’t quite sure yet how to take off a blanket or adjust. They just seem to sweat. So having a mattress that doesn’t overheat is key.
Hybrid or innerspring mattresses also offer a more sound support system. I think this is also a good idea for little ones. Having a mattress that is too soft isn’t good for growing bodies. But having a dense piece of foam that doesn’t have any flexibility isn’t always best either.
Below are 3 great toddler mattress options that I would highly recommend. They are even great for adults, so if you spend a few nights sleeping on it, you won’t mind.

Best Natural Mattress for Kids:
Now more than ever we have a very conscious idea of what we are sleeping on. We want our children safe and happy and having a completely natural and organic mattress for our kids may be at the top of your list. If so, you may be okay with adjusting your budget to a more robust number to ensure a mattress that eliminates any manmade foams, like memory foam or polyfoam. That also means that latex is going to be the foam for you. Whether it is an all latex mattress or a latex hybrid, you will definitely get the advantages of this organic material.
Though most latex and latex hybrid mattresses are quite expensive there are a few brands out there that keep your budget in check. One that focuses on just that is Latex for Less. This latex mattress provides safe 100% natural latex, organic cotton and natural wool for a bed that is as safe and sound as it gets. In a Twin size you are looking to spend $699 or $799, depending on how thick you want it. However, this mattress will last for years, even insured with a 20 year warranty. So no worries about replacing this bed.

Best Firm Mattress For Kids:
A lot of people know that there are benefits to a firmer bed. This holds true for kids too. Having a firm and solid supportive mattress can help with posture, weight distribution, sleeping cooler and creating better sleep habits to promote sleeping on your back. Hence why many search for a firm bed for their kids at every stage.
One of the best firm mattresses that I have come across happens to also be one of the best priced too. The Allswell Hybrid is a 10″ coil and foam combination that borders between medium-firm and firm. Which for a smaller frame will be a true firm feel. This mattress is a solid bed that will still be comfortable but really offer ample support.
The Allswell Hybrid reminds me of the type of mattress my grandparents would want. Nothing with a lot of bells and whistles, just a no frills firm bed that will last and last. And, on top of it comes in at a very affordable $245 for a Twin size. Making it a great choice that isn’t going to break the budget either. Making it my favorite option for the best firm mattress for children.

Best Mattress for a Trundle Bed:
If you happen to have a bed with a trundle bed underneath you will be looking for a nice thin mattress. These sleep systems come in handy when you have sleepovers, extra guests or even a sick kid that needs a parent near by. Whatever the use, they do require a more specific mattress.
If you don’t have a thin enough mattress than you can’t easily tuck it away. If you are able to find a mattress that is between 6 to 8 inches you will certainly have plenty of clearance. On top of the thickness you probably won’t want to spend a whole lot on the mattress either.
A great options is a very affordable 6 inch innerspring mattress by LinenSpa. In a Twin size this mattress comes in less than $75. Keeping it very reasonable and still comfortable and supportive. This is why this is also Amazon’s Choice for mattresses in the 6″ thickness category. With over 4,000 Amazon reviews, almost all 5 star, and free shipping this is a great thinner innerspring mattress.

With over 25,000 reviews and the majority 5 star you can’t go wrong with this memory foam bed.

Best Mattress for Bunk Bed:
Similar to the best mattresses for trundle beds the best mattresses for bunk beds will need to be thinner too. The top bunk is typically the one that you need to really worry about. Not only do you want to ensure plenty of head room but you also don’t want the guard rail to not function properly. Safety is definitely key with bunkbeds, so having a thinner mattress will help make sure your set-up is safe.
A few thinner mattresses, less than 8 inches, that are top mattresses for bunk beds are the following:
